Many wives of professional male athletes have to consider the possibility of their husbands' infidelity, particularly during a long season with numerous road trips. How they handle their fear and stress, varies, and may depend on their true motivation for marriage.

It seems that wives develop coping strategies over time. Some women are drawn to marry an athlete more for the lifestyle and money rather than for love or the relationship. There are some women who marry the 'athlete' more than the 'man'. They tend to be more accepting of their husbands' affairs. Not only do they fear losing financial security and the affluent lifestyle, they often possess low self-esteem.
Many women who married before their husbands became professional athletes do not tolerate long-term extramarital affairs, though many were forced to deal with their spouses' "one-time only" and "one-night stands." If there is not a strong spiritual base for the marriage an affair can break it apart quickly.
A wife has choices to deal with infidelity. To ignore it, to bring it out in the open and demand it to stop, to seek marriage counseling and use it to make their marriage stronger, some choose to retaliate and have their own affair, or to dissolve the marriage. Some will give the husband the benefit of the doubt, but will use the incident to set a few ground rules. The trust has been broken and the adulterer must work on strengthening that bond.
No matter whatever direction they decide to go, they still continue to manage the family life. The wives are strong, intelligent and resilient. That's why many of the athletes married them in the first place.
The wife is the support system without which many men could not survive.
