Giant Sinkhole at Charlotte Motor Speedway Makes Big Headlines

A giant sinkhole at Charlotte Motor Speedway in NC is making big headlines and causing a lot of headaches for all concerned. This huge sinkhole has developed along the backstretch of the racetrack close to a camping area, which just happened to be built over a landfill. The appearance of this sinkhole is being classified as a minor disaster but there is a humorous side to the chaos as well. For example, there have been a few interesting discoveries.

Some of the things they found in this hole include relics that dated back over thirty years ago. One of the most interesting finds was "The Charlotte News" newspaper with the date July 16th 1977. Two of the main headlines were "North Korea Releases Crewman" and a movie review about "Star Wars" along with a segment about an actor who was basically unknown at the time named, Harrison Ford. A step ladder and a 2 liter glass bottle of cola were also found.

The sinkhole developed after the rain from Tropical Storm Nicole passed through the region. The heavy rains combined with the area being built over a landfill are believed to be part of the reason the sinkhole developed. However, it was discovered that a drain pipe located underneath the landfill had also deteriorated. The pipe was over thirty years old and when it collapsed it was a major factor that contributed to the problem causing the sinkhole to form.

Repairs are already underway starting with the replacement of the drain pipe. Workers are also placing concrete around the joints and laying gravel around the pipe for more support. Packing the sinkhole with dirt has also begun but there is still a lot to do and not much time left to complete the work.

The hole needs to be filled and new asphalt put down before the big races take place on October 15th and 16th. Even though the sinkhole is not on the race track directly, it's still a big problem that needs to be taken care of before visitors begin to arrive and the race track is booming again.

This speedway is one of the major tacks used by NASCAR and it draws in thousands of race fans each year. They can't afford to be out of commission due to a sinkhole so filling it is top priority at this time. Once it's filled, things will be back to normal and fans will be back enjoying the races like nothing ever happened.
