Reedy Creek Park, A Charlotte Picnic Haven

Do you live in the Charlotte, NC area? Are you trying to save some money this summer by staying close to home for your vacation? You'll love going on a picnic in one of Mecklenburg County's great parks! The Mecklenburg County Parks and Recreation Department has broken the County into five Park Regions. In this series of articles we'll feature at least one park from each of these regions. In this article we'll start with Reedy Creek Park from the East Park Region.

charlotte hornets hat

Reedy Creek Park at 2900 Rocky River Road has something for everyone from the adventurer to the laid back soul to the kids to the family dog. It features one indoor and nine outdoor pavilions that can be reserved for your family reunion or corporate event. Each of these pavilions has grills and plenty of picnic tables for your event. There are also plenty of individual picnic tables spread around the park for your convenience.

CHARLOTTE

If you're looking to work up a sweat, there are several options for you at Reedy Creek Park. My favorite is the 18 hole disc golf course. This course takes playing frisbee to a whole new level. The object is to throw your disc through a chain link "hole" several hundred feet away. The hilly course winds through the woods and crosses water to challenge even the most skilled disc golfer. You'll be surprised at the workout this game will give you. If disc golf isn't your game, there are volleyball courts, softball fields, a basketball court and soccer fields to keep you busy. One of the soccer fields can be configured into a regulation cricket pitch. Did you know that anyone even plays cricket in the United States?

The park borders on the Reedy Creek Nature Center and Preserve. The Preserve has 10 miles of well marked hiking trails that will offer you the opportunity to get back to nature with a great variety of wildlife. The trails will take you up and down hills, across streams and through meadows as you see a variety of birds, mammals and assorted plant life. The trails vary in difficulty from easy to quite strenuous so make sure you stop at the Nature Center and check out the map before you start hiking. Dogs are allowed on the trails as long as they're kept on leashes no more than six feet in length. Please clean up after your dog.

The Nature Center itself is open Monday - Saturday from 9:00 to 5:00 and Sunday from 1:00 to 5:00. The Nature Center features live animals, an exhibit hall and a gift shop. Perhaps the best thing about the Nature Center are the educational programs they offer. During the summer season they have almost daily programs that range from "Hovering Hummingbirds" to "P.L.A.N.T. Club" (Preschoolers Learning About Nature Together). For more information, search for Reedy Creek Park's Facebook page.

For those of us who like to take things a bit slower, Reedy Creek Park has horseshoe pits, fishing in two different ponds and plenty of space to just kick back and relax. If you're going to fish, you'll need a license if you're aged 16 or over. There are also playgrounds for the kids.

Remember I said there was even something for the family dog? Barkingham Park is a four acre fenced in dog park where you can let your best friend off his leash and let him run around. Dogs have to be fully documented and current in their vaccinations to be allowed in the park and children under 12 have to remain outside the dog park.

In our next article, we'll pay a visit to Freedom Park in the Central Park Region. Freedom Park is thought of as Charlotte's version of New York's Central Park. Stay tuned.

The Peter Shandy Series by Charlotte MacLeod

Between 1978 and 1996 Charlotte MacLeod published ten Peter Shandy novels, all of them wild, wacky and witty. Her characters range from the straight laced to the totally demented. Her plots are frequently laugh out loud funny. If you like unconventional mysteries that are well written I suggest that you try this series.

charlotte hornets

In the first book "Rest you Merry" we meet Peter Shandy, a professor at Balaclava Agricultural College and co-propagator of the Balaclava Buster rutabaga. It is Christmas time which means that it is time for the college's main fund raising event, The Grand Illumination. For years Peter's neighbor Jemima Ames has badgered him to decorate his house on the crescent. This year he decides he has had enough. After all but burying his house under gaudy decorations he escapes Balaclava for a sea trip only to be shipwrecked. Slinking back home to face his irate neighbors he finds Jemima's body behind his couch. Is it an accident or murder? Thorkjeld Svenson, college president, champion of the straight furrow and berserker Viking, assigns Peter to find out, without ruining the illumination.

CHARLOTTE

The second book is "The Luck Runs Out". Strange things are happening in Balaclava County. First some prankster turns all the horse shoes nailed up in the college barns upside down, letting the luck run out, figuratively speaking. Second, the silversmith's vault is emptied in a daring robbery while the newly married Peter and Helen Shandy just happen to be there picking out their silverware. Third, Belinda of Balaclava, the college's prize sow is pignapped and the local farrier is found dead in the sty's mash feeder. Peter is once again assigned to sort out the mysteries.

Third is "Wrack and Rune". Professor Timothy Ames is visiting the Horsefalls farm in Lumpkin Corners when their hired man dies in a very nasty way. After calling the police and doctor, his next call is to Peter Shandy. Now Peter must find out why someone has been harassing the Horsefalls. Is the death another prank that has gone wrong or cold blooded murder? How does the old Viking rune-stone on the property fit into the mystery? To find the answers, Peter must deal with pranksters, large crowds of sightseers, and the college president's 102 year old uncle Sven's pursuit of an older woman.

Number four on the list is "Something the Cat Dragged In". Retired professor Ungley rents Mrs. Lomax's downstairs apartment. When her cat Edmund shows up with his hairpiece in his mouth, her only thought is to return it before the professor misses it. When she finds him not home and his bed not slept in she goes looking for him and finds him impaled on a harrow peg behind the Balaclava Society's clubhouse. Police Chief Ottermole calls the death an accident but Mrs. Lomax doesn't believe it and when Edmund finds another clue it leads straight back to the college. Overnight Balaclava County is the scene of a power struggle between town and gown that could destroy Balaclava Agricultural College. Naturally President Svenson assigns Peter Shandy, the Hercule Poirot of the turnip fields, the job of uncovering the murderer.

"The Curse of the Giant Hogweed" is the fifth book in the series. In this book Professors Shandy, Ames, and Stott have traveled to England to assist with the problems being caused by the growth of giant hogweed. When they set out to do field work they cross the border into Wales and find a world they didn't expect. Trapped in the hogweed and confronted by a giant looking for the King's pet griffin, it doesn't take them long to realize that life has become even more bizarre then usual.

Number six is "The Corpse in Oozak's Pond". It's Ground Hog day and all of Balaclava has turned out to see if the College ground hog will see his shadow. They get more of a show then they expect when a corpse pops up through the ice on the pond. When two more deaths follow, it's up to Peter to find some answers.

In the seventh book, Vane Pursuit, Peter's wife Helen is photographing antique weather vanes for the historical society. It seems like no sooner does she her pictures then the weather vanes come up missing. When someone fire bombs the Lumpkin soap factory shortly after their weather vane is photographed and someone dies in the fire Peter starts to investigate. Before he finds the answers he will tangle with a motley group of survivalists, assist a heiress who's hiding out, and fear for the life of his beloved Helen.

Eighth in the series is An Owl Too Many. When Emory Emmerick, a site engineer for the college's new TV station gets stabbed to death during the annual owl count Peter Shandy is once again on the case. A dead man who isn't who he said he was, a secretary who keeps getting herself tied to trees, and a wild ride down a raging river in a tug boat make this a rollicking adventure as well as a good mystery.

Number nine is Something in the Water. Peter has gone to check out reports of beautiful, lush, lupines growing where they shouldn't be able to grow at all. Staying in an old inn, he is waiting for his desert when the town's most disliked citizen keels over face first into his diner. Foul play is suspected but Peter is much more interested in the lupines. Interested or not Peter soon finds himself trying to solve three mysteries. Who killed Jaspar Flodge, how are such lush plants growing in such poor soil, and who is the unknown artist who refuses to admit to painting such beautiful canvasses.

Number ten, the last but not least in the series is Exit the Milkman. Professor Feldster, Balaclava's dairy expert and the Shandy's neighbor has disappeared. Last seen on his way to one of his many lodge meetings he is seen getting into a big car with tinted windows and then nothing. He never shows up at the lodge, doesn't come home and doesn't show up for his morning class. Before he is found his obnoxious wife dies in a bizarre manor. Once again Peter must leave his turnip fields and classroom to play Sherlock Holmes.

By the time he landed in Charlotte, he'd spent time on five other rosters over the course of the season. Starting with the Reading Royals, there were stops in Albany, San Antonio, Norfolk and Portland. He has settled in with the Checkers and has put in a solid season this year with just the one team.

Devin DiDiomete played for the Sudbury Wolves for 3 seasons from 2004-05 to 2006-07 before finishing off his OHL career with the Sarnia Sting in 2007-08. Devin played a good portion of this season with the Hartford Wolf Pack of the AHL before being sent down to the Checkers.

Daniel Tkaczuk had a stellar OHL career with the Barrie Colts from 1995-96 to 1998-99. He represented Canada at the World Junior Tournament in 1999 and came home with a silver medal. Daniel spent 6 seasons in Europe before returning to the North American game this season.

T.J. Reynolds played his first two OHL seasons, 1998-99 and 1999-00 with the Oshawa Generals. 2000-01 was split between the Generals and the St. Michael's Majors. 2001-02 was split between the Majors and the Mississauga IceDogs. This is T.J.'s first season with the Checkers and he is, by far, the team's PIM leader, averaging around 4.7 minutes per game in the box.

Randy Rowe played for the Belleville Bulls from 1997-98 to 2000-01. The highlight of his OHL career was a 64 goal performance in 63 games during the 2000-01 season. Randy is property of the Lake Erie Monsters (Colorado Avalanche) and has split this season between the Monsters and the Checkers.

Chris Chappell is a Charlotte Checker but is currently not on the active roster. Chris played for the Saginaw Spirit from 2005-06 to 2008-09. He spent time with both the Wolf Pack and the Checkers in this, his first pro season.

Jane Eyre - A British Literary Classic by Charlotte Bronte

Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Bronte, takes place in the late 18th and early 19th century in the countryside of England. Supernatural occurrences are a main theme in this mysterious love story. These supernatural occurrences take place throughout Jane's life and can be connected to her eventual marriage.

charlotte nc

After the death of her parents, Jane is left in the care of her uncle and his wife, the Reed's. But the orphaned Jane is mistreated by her aunt, despite Mrs. Reed's promise to her dying husband to rear and maintain Jane as one of her own. On one particular evening, Jane is unjustly banished to the very room where nine years prior Mr. Reed had breathed his last breath, on a tabernacle like bed. The cold and dark red room frightened Jane. Mysteriously, as warm thoughts of how kindly her uncle would have treated her if he were still alive, she is distracted by a white gleam of light on the wall. Could it be it a ray of light from the moon? A contortion of a child's imagination? A ghostly visit from her uncle? Or, perhaps a vision prompted by one of Bessie's, who is of Gypsy descent, evening stories? Whatever the nature of the premonition is, it shocked Jane into a state of unconsciousness.

CHARLOTTE

In late adolescence, Jane is again influenced by one of Bessie's haunting folktales, this time while walking in the solitary woods. An approaching horse reminds Jane of a North of England lone spirit called Gytrash. But the myth is broken when Jane notices the rider; Jane is charmed by the heroic gallantry of the rider who will later become her husband. Bronte's portrayal of this mystical meeting between Jane and Edward Rochester seems haunting in the moonlit woods, yet romantic as the young Jane Eyre discovers her first feelings of attraction for a man. Rochester is testy in rejecting Jane's offers of help and appears suspicious that Jane, who appears elflike to him in the gray woods, has hexed him and his fallen horse. Reluctantly, the injured Rochester leans on Jane's shoulder for guidance and mounts back on his horse. No introductions are ever made and no names are exchanged.

As an adult, Jane experiences a strange phenomenon that ultimately reunites her with her estranged love, Rochester. After agreeing to marry St. John Rivers in a distant place called Marsh Glen, Jane hears an urgent and desperate voice call her name. Under the cover of a dark and moonlit night, Jane knows it is the voice of Rochester. Perhaps the spirits, which seem to follow Jane and guide her, are stirred by this proposed union. Perhaps the spirits of her uncle and dear friend Helen Burns have intervened to allow this psychic connection with Rochester. She responds to the voice with passion and with knowledge that she will soon be in the arms of her love. Jane attributes this occurrence not to superstition, not to witchcraft, but to a heaven sent miracle.

Many of Jane's attitudes are shaped by the many supernatural occurrences that take place in her life. These experiences began in childhood and figure prominently in her unlikely reunion with Rochester. Jane ultimately marries her Master, despite his handicaps, and they live a full and happy life together.

Giant Sinkhole at Charlotte Motor Speedway Makes Big Headlines

A giant sinkhole at Charlotte Motor Speedway in NC is making big headlines and causing a lot of headaches for all concerned. This huge sinkhole has developed along the backstretch of the racetrack close to a camping area, which just happened to be built over a landfill. The appearance of this sinkhole is being classified as a minor disaster but there is a humorous side to the chaos as well. For example, there have been a few interesting discoveries.

charlotte russe

Some of the things they found in this hole include relics that dated back over thirty years ago. One of the most interesting finds was "The Charlotte News" newspaper with the date July 16th 1977. Two of the main headlines were "North Korea Releases Crewman" and a movie review about "Star Wars" along with a segment about an actor who was basically unknown at the time named, Harrison Ford. A step ladder and a 2 liter glass bottle of cola were also found.

CHARLOTTE

The sinkhole developed after the rain from Tropical Storm Nicole passed through the region. The heavy rains combined with the area being built over a landfill are believed to be part of the reason the sinkhole developed. However, it was discovered that a drain pipe located underneath the landfill had also deteriorated. The pipe was over thirty years old and when it collapsed it was a major factor that contributed to the problem causing the sinkhole to form.

Repairs are already underway starting with the replacement of the drain pipe. Workers are also placing concrete around the joints and laying gravel around the pipe for more support. Packing the sinkhole with dirt has also begun but there is still a lot to do and not much time left to complete the work.

The hole needs to be filled and new asphalt put down before the big races take place on October 15th and 16th. Even though the sinkhole is not on the race track directly, it's still a big problem that needs to be taken care of before visitors begin to arrive and the race track is booming again.

This speedway is one of the major tacks used by NASCAR and it draws in thousands of race fans each year. They can't afford to be out of commission due to a sinkhole so filling it is top priority at this time. Once it's filled, things will be back to normal and fans will be back enjoying the races like nothing ever happened.

charlotte russe shoes

Car rentals are very useful especially for companies to hire or lease cars for their employees, to provide pick-up and drop services.

CHARLOTTE

Start-Up Details of a Car Rental Business:

Any business venture has to be carefully examined and analyzed to determine the feasibility of the idea. Research and analysis of the competitors can help you accurately arrive at a conclusion if the venture is viable or not. Determine a location to begin the business and study it extensively to find out if there is a demand for the rental business, if so the extent of the demand. Find out who rents cars, individuals or enterprises.

It will help if you gave your business a legal structure, select an appropriate name, and register it. This gives you limited liability protection. You will also require a good insurance coverage. So shop around and get a good coverage from a reputed agency.

It will be necessary to have certain licenses and permits in order to operate a car rental business. Get the necessary information by consulting an attorney.

Carefully list the vehicles you will rent and estimate start-up costs as well as initial expenses. If you are short of funds, carefully prepare a loan application.

Select an ideal location for your business, make sure the lease is a long-term gross lease, and check if the zoning restrictions are followed. Perhaps you will require an office in a commercial area and a garage to house all your cars, if necessary, in another location that is not too far away.

Figure out the services you will provide and the rates you will charge, the durations of the lease minimum and maximum. Be sure to maintain and services your fleet of vehicles periodically.

Hire necessary staff as per the needs of your business. Make sure they are qualified for the job they have to perform and that their performance is assessed. You could buy certain products available to help new entrepreneurs like you run their business successfully.

Advertise your service in all media such as newspapers, radio, TV, magazines, direct calling clients. Have a Web site listing your fleet of cars and the services you provide and the rates you charge. Make sure your firms brochures are available in tourist centers and hotels and are listed in the yellow pages. You could also use a rent-to-own option, as it will take care of the problem of disposing used cars, which seem to have no market value. Target corporate clients by direct calling, by having a representative meet them and explain the benefits of using your services etc.

If under good management, a car rental business can be a good business venture.

The Dog Days Of Charlotte Hayes By Marlane Kennedy - A Review

Twelve year old Charlotte Hayes is a nice kid but not a dog person. Charlotte's dad brings home an adorable Saint Bernard puppy and she is not happy about it. She is the one who is supposed to help care for it and she could care less about it. However, as time goes on, Charlotte finds that she is the ONLY one to take care of this pup. Mom is too tired from taking care of and chasing after her little baby brother, while her older sister cares for only one thing-herself!...well, and boys! Charlotte's father really does intend to help care for this puppy but he is always off to do something else and forgets about his commitment. So what is Charlotte to do?

charlotte hornets jersey

The puppy is named Beauregard and Charlotte knows that he needs a better home. He needs a place where there will be someone around to love him, play with him, and care for him. She realizes he is a pretty nice dog and it isn't fair to chain him in the back yard and with his too small dog house.

CHARLOTTE

Charlotte comes up with an idea of what she can to help and it isn't that hard but she will need her friends to help her. While making these plans and working toward a better life for Beauregard, Charlotte finds out something about herself. Surely, by know you know what that is.

Charlotte might just like this puppy dog after all. Her compassion and friendships are admirable and good role models for young children to read about. Every age group will enjoy reading or hearing this story. Even adults, especially dog lovers will enjoy reading about the growing relationship between Charlotte and this gentle giant. Fans will shout when Charlotte comes to Beauregard's aide and helps him to have a happy life while in turn, improving the lives of those around her. Kennedy has herself a winner in this story. A puppy and a little girl's love aren't hard to care about. Kid's Book by Karen Haney, March, 2009

Charlotte, Emily, and Anne Bronte - The Popular Victorian Writers Who Were Sisters

Charlotte, Emily, and Anne Bronte originally published their novels under the pen names of Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell. They felt that book publishers and the reading public would take them more seriously if they used the names of men. The year 1847 saw the publication of Charlotte's masterpiece, Jane Eyre; Emily's singular contribution to literature, Wuthering Heights; and Anne's Agnes Grey.

charlotte nc

Both Charlotte and Anne's novel concerned the lives of governesses. Both sisters pointed out the plight of single, educated women in a time when women were dependent on male relatives for financial security. Employment opportunities were few and far between for an unmarried woman of those days. Without a husband or relative to depend on, Victorian women faced a life of poverty and peril. Governess jobs, or employment in a girls' school was the only avenue for success. And those jobs did not allow for Independence. A governess lived in the home of her charges while a teacher at a girls' school generally lived on the school campus.

CHARLOTTE

The Bronte sisters understood these problems first hand. The knew that if their preacher father would die, they would be left penniless and homeless. All three sisters attempted employment in the above mentioned fields. Emily had the most difficult time. She became homesick and pined for her 'liberty,' as she called her time spent alone on the moors. Indeed, Emily was a recluse and spent little time away from home. Charlotte Bronte bemoaned the drudgery of her employment and felt that the dull routine stifled her mind.

Charlotte, Emily, and Anne Bronte decided to open a girls school, hoping for the intellectual challenge of being in charge, as well as creating a place for themselves to work and prosper after the death of their father. The school project failed. Charlotte urged her sisters to write novels and the three of them produced their books in secret, in the dining room of the Parsonage at Haworth.

It was not until after the death of Emily that Charlotte and Anne revealed their true identifies to their publisher. Anne died shortly after, leaving Charlotte alone, to deal with the legacy of the Bronte Sisters.

Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte's Inspirations for Lowood School

Schools in nineteenth-century England were brutal and uncompromising institutions. Lowood School from Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre is a typical girls school of that era, and its depiction was derived from the author's own experiences at The Clergy Daughters' School, located in Cowan Bridge, a village in the county of Lancashire.

charlotte olympia

When the apothecary Mr. Lloyd inquires whether the child Jane would like to go to school, the protagonist recalls her nursemaid Bessie's observations of school being "a place where young ladies sat in stocks, wore back-boards, and were expected to be exceedingly genteel and precise" (I, 3, p.25).

CHARLOTTE

Bessie's remarks echo the reality of much girls schooling in the early nineteenth century, as well as going some way to anticipating Jane's grueling experiences at Lowood, where the pupils are mistreated, and the accommodation, sanitation, and provisions are all of a very poor quality. These aspects are vividly illustrated in several passages, such as the serving of burnt porridge to the girls at breakfast: "I saw an universal manifestation of discontent when the fumes of the repast met the nostrils of those destined to swallow it" (I, 5, p.45), and the building's lack of heating: "this morning we were obliged to dispense with the ceremony of washing: the water in the pitchers was frozen" (I, 6, p.52).

Many of these incidents are drawn from Charlotte's own experiences at Cowan Bridge school, as are several of the characters who figure in them.

Lowood School's headmaster and treasurer is Mr. Brocklehurst, a grim and pious man who runs the institution as cheaply as possible. When Jane first encounters him the fleeting impression she gets at first glance is that of "a black pillar!" (I, 4, p.31). Mr. Brocklehurst has an original in the Reverend William Carus-Wilson (1791-1859), the founder of The Clergy Daughters' School. Carus-Wilson was a Calvinist Evangelist, ordained in 1816. He was also the son of a prosperous landowner. Revelations concerning Carus-Wilson's running of the school caused much controversy in later years.

The kindly superintendent Miss Temple who Jane develops a close friendship with has a real life counterpart in Ann Evans, who was the superintendent at Cowan Bridge school. Charlotte's favourable depiction of Miss Temple is considered a 'just tribute' to Ann Evans's character.

Another Lowood staff member who was modeled on an actual person is Miss Scatcherd, the History and Grammar teacher who mercilessly bullies Jane's friend Helen Burns. Miss Scatcherd is apparently based on a Miss Andrews, who taught at Cowan Bridge school when the Bronte sisters attended, and Charlotte's portrayal of her is quite the opposite to that of Ann Evans. In fact, along with John Reed, Miss Scatcherd is arguably the most unpleasant character in the novel. In her Life of Charlotte Bronte, Elizabeth Gaskell alludes to the harsh behaviour of Miss Andrews, cruelties echoed in the Lowood section of Jane Eyre, such as when Helen is birched by Miss Scatcherd for having dirty fingernails, despite being unable to wash them due to the water being frozen that morning.

The character of Helen Burns is generally thought to be modeled on Charlotte's eldest sister Maria, who died of consumption in 1825, aged only 11. She developed the illness from her insalubrious surroundings at The Clergy Daughters' School. Charlotte herself maintained that the school's privations permanently affected her health as well and that she didn't exaggerate any details in her descriptions of Lowood in relation to the school at Cowan Bridge.

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte - 5 things you should know.

charlotte russe

Well, six actually if you include the fact that there are now four different Jane Eyre audio books you can download. This is a great way to learn Jane Eyre quotes and get to know the characters and how they pronounce the Victorian English, especially the fully dramatized version which features Claire Bloom and Sir Anthony Quale.

CHARLOTTE

There was a lot of tragedy in the life of Charlotte Bronte.

Charlotte was only five years old when her mother died in 1821. Four years later in 1825, when Charlotte was nine, two of her older sisters died - Maria aged eleven, and Elizabeth aged ten. She had three other siblings - Patrick, who died in 1848, aged 31 - Emily, who also died in 1848, aged 30 - and Ann, died in 1849, aged 29. Charlotte outlived all of her siblings and died at the early age of 39, in 1855. The fact that the three Bronte sisters are acknowledged as being among the greatest novelists in the English language is remarkable when you consider their short lives.

The character of Jane Eyre has many similarities to the life of the author.

Charlotte Bronte lived in a bleak moorland near Haworth, her father was a clergyman and the family lived on a meager salary. Her formative years were filled with loss. After the death of her mother, Charlotte was brought up by a strict aunt. In the Jane Eyre novel, Mrs. Reed seems to resemble Charlotte's aunt and the other aspects of her childhood are also evident.

Jane Eyre is often referred to as one of the best love stories in the English language.

The story revolves around a young strong willed woman's search for love and compassion. Jane is offered the job as governess to a ten year old girl and finds herself falling in love with her employer, Mr. Rochester. There is a parallel here to Charlotte Bronte's time in Brussels, where she went in 1842 to improve her grasp of the French and German languages. Whilst there, she stayed in a small hotel owned by Constantin Heger, a married man, with whom she falls in love, sadly without reciprocation.

Charlotte Bronte struggled to have her work published.

Her first novel 'The Professor', a novel about her life in Brussels, was rejected by her publisher and only saw the light of day after her death. Even, her major work, Jane Eyre, was published under a pseudonym Currer Bell.

Charlotte Bronte was influenced by the emerging romantic authors and poets of Victorian England.

These include William Wordsworth, Lord Byron and Sir Walter Scott. The Bronte sisters also wrote poetry and were very supportive of each other.

Charlotte - Mecklenburg Schools Lead the Nation in Preschool Education Programs

One program in Charlotte Schools is focusing on the littlest learners. Recognizing that good learners begin early, education officials have developed an award winning preschool program called Bright Beginnings.

Bright Beginnings

CNA CLASSES IN CHARLOTTE NC

The Bright Beginnings program involves full day, literacy based programs for four year olds in the Charlotte - Mecklenburg area. More than 3000 students benefit from the program at five education centers and fourteen elementary schools. Over time the program has spread beyond the public school system and has been integrated into preschool classrooms throughout the community by partnering with the Smart Start, Child Care Resources, Child Care Centers, and More at Four programs, which all target the education needs of preschool students.

Developing Pre - K Experiences

Teachers and program developers recognize the need for enriching experiences at the preschool level. Students at this age have very limited opportunities to explore the world around them, and the Bright Beginnings Program hopes to change that. By exposing children to new and different things, program developers believe that they can strengthen student vocabulary, a skill that they hope will carry over when the students learn to read. While many of these new experiences take place in the classroom, Bright Beginnings also encourages students with field trips to local learning centers, such as Discovery Place and ImaginOn.

Aligning Pre - K with Elementary Education Curriculum and Instruction

Bright Beginnings has recently been incorporated under the North Carolina State Elementary Education Curriculum and Instruction area. Teachers hope to build connections between what they do in the Bright Beginnings program and what students will need to do when they enter kindergarten. The new partnership seeks to produce students entering kindergarten who are better prepared to learn and kindergarten teachers with a clearer idea of what their students have been exposed to and how they can build on that knowledge as they move through kindergarten. The program has the potential to raise student achievement at every grade level, as better prepared students advance year to year. Bright Beginnings recognizes that as Elementary Education Standards increase, preschool student curriculum must as well. As the director of the program explains, "(Children) are expected to learn more. The standards have increased, not just in college and high school but in kindergarten too."

Professional Development for Teachers

As part of Bright Beginnings commitment to preschool education, Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools has used federal and state grant money to ensure that the teachers working in the program are highly trained and qualified. All teachers must be certified in early child development, meaning that they have studied children from birth to kindergarten.

National Recognition for Bright Beginnings

Several years ago, Bright Beginnings sold its award winning curriculum to Pearson Publishing. Through this partnership, the curriculum has been distributed nationwide and continues to grow in neighborhoods far from the Charlotte - Mecklenburg area. The director of the program credits Bright Beginning's success to the continued dedication of teachers and developers to work towards better learning practices. She comments, "We've started some new things and we're going to continue to build them. We have gotten great marks for our curriculum for years. (Charlotte - Mecklenburg Schools) is a leader in the nation."

Charlotte Mason - Copywork Jumpstarts Your Child's Spelling

Homeschool families know the value of good penmanship and many introduce copywork as an aid to good writing. But, did you know that copywork can also help your child be an outstanding speller?

charlotte nc

What is copywork?

CHARLOTTE

Copywork is copying out by hand from a written source. The value of copywork is to instill the mechanics of great writing. Children learn proper grammar, spelling and phrasing through copying great literature. Charlotte Mason, a British educational reformer, recommended the use of copywork as a beginning point for spelling.

Charlotte Mason and Copywork

Charlotte Mason saw transcription as an introduction to spelling. Children are encouraged to look at the word, see a picture of it with their eyes shut, and then write from memory. Plain and simple, this was the means she used.

Charlotte Mason encouraged educators to allow the child to choose his own passages because it gives him a sense of possession and delight. (Home Education, p. 238)

How does it help my child spell?

When reading, the eye slides over the word. For copywork, a child must slow down and analyze the individual words in order to transcribe correctly. In the process the child sees the word as it is, that is correctly and it makes an impression on the mind the will be brought up when the need arises to spell.

Is copywork different from penmanship?

Penmanship is the first step in copywork. A child learns to form each letter through practice. Then, when doing copywork, letter practice is the primary goal. Second is to use well-written, high-quality quotes from literature to inspire and delight.

Is copywork only for penmanship practice?

Yes. It begins as letter formation practice. Once these are mastered, it is for exposure to the best in writing. Copywork done properly forces a child to slow down and absorb the punctuation details, notice capitalization, and internalize sparkling prose.

When should I start copywork with my child?

When your child has begun to master basic writing, usually seven or eight, is a good time to begin,

What are the very best sources for copywork?

Bible Shakespeare Books of poetry Lively, well-written prose Science writing that is descriptive and inspirational Hymns Bartlette's Familiar Quotations (for quotes by topic). Quote in a foreign language being studied

Charlotte Mason Homeschooling

Important characteristics of a Charlotte Mason (C.M.) education include the use of inspirational and engaging "living books", nature study, and exposure to music, art, poetry, and literature. Copywork and narration are commonly used techniques, along with picture study, composer study, and nature journaling. Often, short lessons in many different subjects are encouraged. Above all, the development of constructive habits and good character are key principles of the approach. While there are many resources that provide C. M. lesson plans, books, and complete online curricula, the C. M. philosophy and homeschooling style is meant to encourage educational possibilities that lie far beyond any one curriculum.

charlotte nc

This style of homeschooling has gone from being virtually unheard of only a few years ago to enjoying an enormous surge in recent popularity. A wonderful source of information for applying C. M. techniques can now be found in the homeschooling blog community, as significant numbers of homeschool bloggers are currently using some or all of Ms. Mason's educational methods. Reading their blogs allows you to be a fly on the wall of dozens of Charlotte Mason homeschools. Learning from their experiences provides you with a steady supply of ideas and food for thought!

CHARLOTTE

Charlotte Mason homeschooling is one of the easier methods for new homeschoolers to jump into, as there are now numerous Charlotte Mason style curricula and materials available, and the intuitive techniques are generally easy to pick up by those who find themselves drawn to them. Online support groups are common, as are local groups of Charlotte Mason oriented homeschoolers. Many of the learning materials needed for this style/method of education are available in local libraries.

Mason's recommendations are also easy to combine with other approaches to homeschooling. It is particularly common to find homeschoolers using a combination of Classical and Charlotte Mason homeschooling materials and techniques, since the educational philosophies dovetail nicely in many ways.

Cheap Car Insurance in Charlotte, North Carolina

Living in Charlotte, North Carolina offers many benefits including the charm of the city's southern hospitality. However, just like most major metropolitan centers in the United States, residents of Charlotte must have liability coverage on their motor vehicles. Failure to provide proof of the minimum amount of coverage including 0,000 for property damage, ,000 for injuries per person per accident and an addition ,000 to cover all injuries can result in a car not being registered. It's easy to see why it might be appealing to simply go out and purchase this no-frills type policy, but that's only going to be adequate in a few instances.

Most of us just need more coverage than that. It might be because we drive a car that is new or newer or it might be because we simply don't feel comfortable about the idea of having such limited coverage in the event an injury does occur. For this reason, there are many insurance companies in Charlotte, North Carolina all offering some form of car insurance coverage that is meant to appeal to the bulk of drivers. Finding the right policy that still offers cheap rates can be a challenge, but it certainly can be done.

CNA CLASSES IN CHARLOTTE NC

One of the best and most effective ways to lower car insurance rates for anyone, regardless of the type of car they drive or their personal driving record is to request a higher deductible. Many insurance companies give quotes based on a deductible of 0. This is the standard amount that most people would pay should they have to cover the deductible on a claim. When the deductible is higher, the individual is agreeing to the premise that they'll pay the additional amount in exchange for a lower insurance rate. For someone who rarely, if ever, makes a claim, this is a great way to secure cheap car insurance in Charlotte, North Carolina.
